Indonesia waives visa for 79 new countries

Blog

Great news for tourists planning to travel to Indonesia has emerged this week.

President Joko Widodo has signed a decree that will grant visa-free entry to tourists from 79 countries.

The Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, Armanatha Nasir, said that this decree will simplify the administrative process for international visitors who are planning to visit the country.

The Ministry for Maritime Affairs, which is in charge of tourism in the country, has confirmed the information and said that the decree will soon be made law. The new policy should become effective in the coming weeks.

Australia among the listed countries

Interestingly, Australia is on the list of countries that will benefit from the visa waiver. With an annual 1.1M visitors, Australia is the third largest source of tourism for Indonesia.  A visa waiver for Australians was already expected last year, but reciprocal issues slowed down the process. Australian tourists currently have to pay a fee of US$35 (A$45) to receive their visas for Indonesia.

20 million tourists per year by 2019

In 2015, 10.41 million international tourists visited Indonesia. They spent an average of US$1,142 per person during their stay. Singaporeans constituted 1.7M of them, while Malaysians accounted for 1.4M.

The government has set a goal to attract 20 million foreign tourists annually by 2019.
