Indonesia Batik

A technique of wax-resist dyeing for cloth, Batik is Indonesia’s most developed art form, with over a thousand years of history; it has been officially designated as a Master piece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
Although the tradition of batik making can be found be a number of different countries in south Asia, the best known and most developed in terms of pattern, technique and the quality of workmanship of all is the Indonesian batik made in the island of Java.
Many experts believe that batik was originally reserved as an art form for the Javanese royalties, as many patterns seen on batik fabrics were reserved for the royalties from Sultan’s palace. Today, in addition to being a UNESCO designated Master piece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, it is also the most representative and popular souvenir of Indonesia.
