In terms of population the capital, Jakarta, has over 10 million inhabitants followed by Surabaya, Bandung, Meda, Semarang and Makassar. Most of these cities are locating in Java. One of the most well-known touristic cities in Indonesia (and Java) is Bali due to its wide range of activities going from beaches to temples.
Galungan is the most famous festival for the Hindu population in Bali. During this celebration, Hindus honor Ida Sang Hying Widi, which is in Hindu’s beliefs, the creator of the universe. They also honor their ancestors by making offerings and showing their gratitude. Finally, it symbolizes the victory of the Dharma (representing the good) over Adharma (the evil).
When does Galungan occur? It happens only once during the Balinese calendar which works on a 210-day cycle. The day varies year per year, but the chosen day marks the return of ancestors and other spirits on earth.
People would use firecrackers and incantations to scare away evil spirits. As for the ancestors and good spirits, Indonesians Hindus would go make offerings in local , praying and honoring the good spirits and ancestors. They also make sure to buy new clean clothes, dance and prepare nice dishes.
Nyepi, a Hindu tradition, which is also called the “Day of Silence” is celebrated every Saka New Year (Isakawarsa) based on the Balinese calendar. Just like the previous festival, the Day of Silence varies according to the yea rand Balinese Calendar. It is mainly located in Bali and for Hindus but even non-Hindus and foreigners are welcome to participate in the festivities.
As you may have understood from the name, it is called the day of silence because shops and stores would usually all be closed on that day while on the previous few days Indonesian would be cleaning their home, Gods status, pray and undertake several traditional rituals. It is also an important moment for fasting and having a rest. To “energetic” activities such as traveling, dancing, firecrackers and even eating are usually not allowed on that day.
The National Day
Finally, we have one of the most important celebrated days at a national level, the Independence day. It is celebrated every year on the August 17th. Indonesia was actually a Dutch colony until the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence signed by the president at that time Sakerno and vice-president Muhammad Hatta. Even though there was some debate about the real date of Indonesian Independence, it is now set to have occurred on Friday, 17 august 1945.

Learn the sculpture in Bali
Ubud is the cultural center of Bali, whether it is for gastronomy, religion, museums, and especially handcrafts. Balinese people are real artists in every fields, they have gold in their fingers! You can have a walk and get lost in the streets of Ubud to see the paints in wonderful galleries, jewellery or batik workshops and a lot of workshops of wood sculpture, whether on statues or furnitures.
If you feel having the soul of a cabinetmaker, take a shot and try to find a training course for Balinese sculptures!
Where to find a sculpture course in Ubud?
You will find at the small town of Mas, close from Ubud, a bunch of workshops where you can practise wood sculpture. You can always get into one of them and ask if it is possible to make a sculpture training course in order to master this art of the Balinese culture! We have been taken by one specific workshop in Mas called the Ngurah Gallery, where we had a course with a real professional of sculpture.
Who is Master Ngurah?
In the workshop of Ngurah, the family is part of the business: ith his brother and his nephew, the handcrafter create such beautiful masterpieces from every sizes and diverses styles. Sir Ngurah speaks a little bit French, as he already exposed its sculptures in Marseille and in Canada. This is not an amateur!
With his team, the handcrafter create with patience and a disconcerting meticulousness orders for hotels and restaurants accross Indonesia, but also for locals (ultimately not so much work for tourists).
How much does a training course of sculpture cost in Bali?
You should consider to take several days at least to learn some basics of their knowledge and know-how of the sculpture art. But you will already see in one day, how talented these people are and how difficult is the work they are doing! Ngurah says that after one month, you will get really strong basics to sculpt. It will cost you only 120 euros for one month of apprenticeship, so you better give a shot if you have a passion for handcrafts!
One day of sculpture costs approximately 4 euros, plus 5 euros for the wood, as you are taking it right after sculpturing it.
The techniques of the Balinese sculpture
The workshops are really simple in Mas. People are working on the floor, on the patio of the house. The tools are rudimentary as well: wood scissors and gouges, have been manufactured by the handcrafters themselves. Here, we are not talking about shoes protections, because the feet are used for blocking the piece. You need to be really flexible to position it and work on it.
Afterwards, the women of the family polish and tease every single piece in order to shine and sublimate them.
When you arrive in the morning at 9 am, the teacher asks you what do you want to create. You will choose right after the pieces you need for your handcrafted object.
You will then have to sculpt the biggest line of your piece, and then
Between noon and 2 pm, you can get something to eat with Ngurah’s nephew who can bring you with its scooter. It is also the opportunity to get some typical Balinese food!
Once you have lunch, you will then keep working on your sculpture until you sculpt what you have decided.
Such a perfect vacation
You would think that becoming a travel blogger is living a dream life. But in fact it is not! I felt overwhelmed by all the work I had to do. That is why on my home, I decided to have a rest and and go to Bali for some vacations.
Last minute vacation
I didn’t really schedule this trip and it was more a last minute vacation. I Just wanted to enjoy the trip without thinking about work and stressful matters. I had my PADI open water certification earlier, and I wanted to improve my diving skills. Amed was my first diving spot. It was an amazing place and I feel like there is no places where you can dive better than there. I have also been to Pemuteran, which was an amazing spot as beautiful as Amed. Besides, I was so lucky to find this place. It is quite hidden so far and very a peaceful place. After some diving sessions in these spots, I have been chilling out at the Griya Villa and Spas in Amed. I had to have some rest a little bit after all these efforts. Cleaning up my body and make myself a brand new man. I had so many issues to relax after my trip in Mongolia, and this was a really good thing for me. Considering my savings and the money I kept for this occasion, I chose to stay in Griya Villa. I spent the whole day diving, but I did not feel tired to swim in my own pool afterwards. Because this was my own pool, so it didn’t really matter if I swim with my underwear on.
Discovering the Balinese life
The goal of this trip was to take care of myself. And after consideration, spending my time at Griya was the best decision I have ever taken since a long time. Griya is an amazing place. There are so many things I enjoyed there. For instance, the art and the atmosphere make me felt it is Balinese. Besides, everyone has been really welcoming and friendly to me. I didn’t regret my choice. And you know what? Bali was the first place where I have been in Southeast Asia. I never imagined this trip in Bali to be like this. So when I felt it for real and saw all these things by my eyes, I was speechless. Many people are telling that Bali is a bunch of stereotypes and I wanted to make things and challenge the received wisdom. Bali is known for being a very beautiful place and has scenes like heaven. It is ideal for backpackers with a small budget. I have also been advised to avoid the South Kuta and its close area, in order to escape from the crowd and not ruining my trip in Bali. Furthermore, the success of the tourism in these areas is ruining the local scenes and those have lost their charm. This is not the kind of places I wanted to see. I am more into calm and peaceful places like Amed and Pemuterain. I have done my utmost to not act like a super tourist. Nonetheless, my curiosity was too strong! So I asked to local people what were the good spots to visit.
The best thing if you want to discover the real local life in Bali is to live in homestay. This was a good way for me to get to know about Bali and it is a different experience from staying at the hotel. And from my perspective, staying in a homestay was the best experience ever. I could get to know about Bali’s culture and lived closely with the family. My plan right after being in a homestay was to spend two days to relax. However, my activities with this family did not really enable me to stick to my plan. Afterwards, I like this plan. By staying together, I could know about all the different thinfs that I wanted to know about Bali. The success of this trip appealed to me and helped me to enjoy the Balinese culture. I got to know in detail this Wayan’s family and have a closer attention to the Balinese culture. As an exchange for this experience, I brought them my Starbuck coffee. But this was definitely the perfect vacation for me.
